The Sovereignty of God: God as Creator and Controller of the Universe

The sovereignty of God is a fundamental theme in the Bible, asserting that God is the supreme authority, creator, and sustainer of all things. This study explores God's creative power and His continued control over the universe based on the JAMB syllabus objectives.

1. Definition of Sovereignty

Sovereignty refers to God's absolute right to rule over His creation. It means that God is the supreme being who possesses ultimate power, authority, and independence. Nothing happens outside of His knowledge or control (Psalm 103:19).

2. The Process and Sequence of Creation (Genesis 1 and 2)

The Bible provides two accounts of creation, each emphasizing different aspects of God's sovereignty:

The First Account (Genesis 1:1 - 2:4a)

This account focuses on the orderly, majestic power of God (Elohim) who creates by divine decree ('And God said...').

  • Day 1: Light and Darkness (Day and Night).
  • Day 2: The Firmament (the sky/expanse) to separate the waters.
  • Day 3: Dry land, Seas, and Vegetation.
  • Day 4: Heavenly bodies (Sun, Moon, and Stars) for seasons, days, and years.
  • Day 5: Creatures of the sea and Birds of the air.
  • Day 6: Land animals and Man (Male and Female) in His image.
  • Day 7: God rested (The Sabbath).

The Second Account (Genesis 2:4b - 25)

This account focuses on the personal and relational nature of God (Yahweh). Man is created first from the dust of the ground, and God breathes the breath of life into him. The woman is created from the man's rib to be a helper.

3. God as Controller of the Universe

God's sovereignty extends beyond the initial act of creation to the ongoing maintenance of the world:

  • Amos 9:5-6: Describes God's power over nature; He touches the land and it melts, and He builds His layers in the sky.
  • Isaiah 45:5-12: Affirms that God is the only Lord. He forms light and creates darkness; He makes well-being and creates calamity. He challenges the creation to question the Creator.
  • Psalm 19:1-6: Highlights that the heavens and the firmament declare God's glory and handiwork without using physical speech.

4. Man’s Role in Advancing God’s Purpose

God did not leave the earth without a caretaker. Man was given specific mandates:

  • Stewardship: Man was placed in the Garden of Eden to till and keep it.
  • Dominion: Man was given authority over the fish, birds, and every living thing.
  • Naming: By naming the animals, man exercised his authority and intelligence.
  • Procreation: To be fruitful, multiply, and fill the earth.
