Faith, Courage, and Protection

The study of Daniel and his three friends (Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego) provides a profound look into the lives of young men who remained faithful to God in a foreign, pagan land. Their experiences highlight the themes of uncompromising faith, divine courage, and God's sovereign protection.

1. The Test of Purity (Daniel 1)

Daniel and his friends (Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah) were among the Jewish captives taken to Babylon by King Nebuchadnezzar. They were selected for their intelligence and physical appearance to be trained for service in the king's palace. However, they faced a spiritual challenge regarding the king's food, which was likely offered to idols or forbidden by Jewish dietary laws.

• The Decision: Daniel purposed in his heart not to defile himself.
• The Test: He requested a ten-day trial of eating only vegetables (pulse) and drinking water.
• The Result: At the end of the ten days, they looked healthier and better nourished than those who ate the king's meat. God gave them knowledge and skill, and Daniel was given the ability to understand visions and dreams.

2. The Fiery Furnace (Daniel 3)

King Nebuchadnezzar set up a massive golden image (60 cubits high) on the plain of Dura and commanded all to worship it at the sound of musical instruments.

• The Accusation: Certain Chaldeans accused Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego of refusing to bow.
• The Courageous Reply: They told the king: 'Our God whom we serve is able to deliver us... But if not, let it be known to you, O king, that we will not serve your gods.'
• The Miracle: They were thrown into a furnace heated seven times hotter than normal. The king saw four men walking in the fire, unbound and unharmed, and the fourth was 'like the Son of God.'
• Effect: Nebuchadnezzar promoted them and decreed that no one should speak against their God.

3. Daniel in the Lions' Den (Daniel 6)

Under King Darius, Daniel’s excellence led to jealousy among other officials. They influenced the king to sign a decree that for thirty days, no one should pray to any god or man except the king, on pain of being thrown into the lions' den.

• Daniel's Faith: Knowing the decree was signed, Daniel went home and prayed three times a day with his windows open toward Jerusalem.
• The Protection: Daniel was cast into the den. The next morning, he was found unharmed because 'God sent His angel and shut the lions' mouths.'
• The Outcome: Darius decreed that all people in his kingdom should fear the God of Daniel, the living God whose kingdom shall not be destroyed.
