Parental Responsibility in the Bible

Parental responsibility is a central theme in the biblical narrative, emphasizing the duty of parents to provide spiritual and moral guidance to their children. The success or failure of parents in this regard often determines the destiny of their families and the nation.

1. Eli: The High Priest’s Failure

Eli served as the High Priest at Shiloh. His two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, were described as 'worthless men' (1 Sam 2:12). They abused their office by taking the best parts of the sacrifices for themselves and committing immorality with women at the entrance of the tent of meeting.

• The Sin: Desecrating the sanctuary and the Lord’s offering.
• Eli's Response: Eli rebuked them verbally but failed to restrain them or take disciplinary action.
• Consequence: God sent a 'man of God' to announce judgment on Eli's house. Eventually, his sons died on the same day in battle, and Eli himself died upon hearing the news. The glory of Israel (the Ark) was captured.

2. Samuel: A Great Prophet with Erring Sons

Despite being a great judge and prophet, Samuel's sons, Joel and Abijah, did not follow in his footsteps. When Samuel grew old, he appointed them as judges in Beersheba.

• The Sin: They turned aside after dishonest gain, took bribes, and perverted justice.
• Result: Their behavior became the pretext for the elders of Israel to demand a king, saying, 'Behold, you are old and your sons do not walk in your ways' (1 Sam 8:5).

3. David: The Consequences of Indulgence

David’s failures as a father were largely characterized by a lack of discipline and the repetition of his own sins in his children.

• Amnon and Tamar: Amnon raped his half-sister Tamar. David was angry but took no punitive action.
• Absalom’s Rebellion: Absalom murdered Amnon in revenge and later led a coup against David. David’s grief over Absalom (2 Sam 18:33) showed his deep love but also highlighted the tragedy of a house in disarray.

4. Asa: A Model of Godly Responsibility

King Asa is presented as a positive example of a leader who prioritized God’s laws over family ties.

• Actions: He did what was right in the eyes of the Lord. He expelled the male cult prostitutes and removed idols.
• Family Reform: Most notably, he removed his grandmother, Maacah, from being queen mother because she had made an abominable image for Asherah.
• Legacy: Though the high places were not all removed, Asa’s heart was wholly true to the Lord all his days.

5. General Biblical Principles on Parenting

• Deuteronomy 6:4-9 (The Shema): Parents are commanded to teach God's laws diligently to their children.
• Proverbs 22:6: 'Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.'
• Proverbs 13:24: 'Whoever spares the rod hates his son, but he who loves him is diligent to discipline him.'
