3. Physiological Variations

These relate to the functioning of the body and internal biochemical processes.

  • Ability to Roll Tongue: This is a genetic trait where some individuals can roll their tongues into a U-shape while others cannot.
  • PTC Tasting: Phenylthiocarbamide (PTC) is a chemical that tastes bitter to some people (tasters) and is tasteless to others (non-tasters).
  • Blood Groups: Humans belong to one of four blood groups (A, B, AB, or O) based on the presence of antigens on the red blood cells. This is a classic example of discontinuous variation.

4. Practical Applications of Variation

Variation is not just a biological concept but has real-world applications:

  • Crime Detection: Fingerprints are unique to every individual (even identical twins), making them reliable for forensic identification.
  • Blood Transfusion: Knowledge of blood groups prevents agglutination (clumping of blood) during transfusions. Group O is the universal donor, while Group AB is the universal recipient.
  • Paternity Determination: While blood groups cannot prove paternity with 100% certainty (they can only exclude a person), they are used as a preliminary screening tool. DNA profiling is the modern, definitive method.
