Excretion in Living Organisms

Definition and Significance

Excretion is the process by which metabolic waste products are eliminated from the body of a living organism. These wastes are the results of chemical activities (metabolism) within the cells. Excretion is vital for homeostasis—the maintenance of a stable internal environment. If waste products like urea, carbon (IV) oxide, and excess salts accumulate, they can become toxic and interfere with normal cellular functions.

Excretory Structures Across Species

Different organisms have evolved specific structures to handle excretion based on their complexity and environment:

  • Contractile Vacuole: Found in unicellular organisms like Amoeba and Paramecium. It primarily regulates water content (osmoregulation) but also helps expel some metabolic waste.
  • Flame Cells (Protonephridia): Found in flatworms (Platyhelminthes) like Planaria. They use cilia to flicker like a flame, pushing waste through canals to the exterior.
  • Nephridia: Found in annelids like earthworms. These are tube-like structures that filter fluid from the body cavity.
  • Malpighian Tubules: Found in insects and spiders. They remove nitrogenous wastes (mostly uric acid) from the hemolymph and empty them into the gut.
  • Kidneys: The primary excretory organs in vertebrates, including humans.
  • Stomata and Lenticels: In plants, gases like oxygen and carbon (IV) oxide are excreted through stomata (leaves) and lenticels (stems).

The Mammalian Kidney and Excretory Mechanisms

The kidney serves two main functions: Excretion and Osmoregulation (maintaining water and salt balance). Each kidney contains millions of functional units called nephrons.

The Process of Urine Formation:

  1. Ultra-filtration: Occurs in the Bowman's capsule. High pressure forces water, glucose, salts, and urea out of the blood (glomerulus) into the capsule. Blood cells and large proteins remain in the blood.
  2. Selective Reabsorption: Occurs in the Proximal Convoluted Tubule (PCT). Useful substances like all glucose, some salts, and water are taken back into the bloodstream.
  3. Osmoregulation: Occurs in the Loop of Henle and Distal Convoluted Tubule (DCT), controlled by the Anti-Diuretic Hormone (ADH) from the pituitary gland.

Excretion via Lungs and Skin

  • Lungs: Excrete carbon (IV) oxide and water vapor, which are products of aerobic respiration.
  • Skin: Excretes sweat through sweat glands. Sweat consists of water, mineral salts (mainly sodium chloride), and traces of urea. This also helps in thermoregulation (cooling the body).

Excretory Products of Plants

Unlike animals, plants do not have complex excretory systems. Waste products are often stored in barks, leaves, or fruits, or released as gases. Many of these products have high economic importance:

  • Alkaloids: Examples include Quinine (treats malaria), Nicotine, and Morphine.
  • Tannins: Used in the leather industry for tanning hides.
  • Resins and Gums: Used in making adhesives, varnishes, and perfumes.
  • Mucilage: Used in food and medicine.
  • Oxygen: A byproduct of photosynthesis, vital for aerobic life.
  • Carbon (IV) Oxide: A byproduct of respiration, used in photosynthesis.
