Reproduction in Living Organisms
Reproduction is the biological process by which new individual organisms – "offspring" – are produced from their "parents". It is a fundamental feature of all known life. Reproduction is categorized into two main types: Asexual and Sexual.
1. Asexual Reproduction
Asexual reproduction involves a single parent and results in offspring that are genetically identical to the parent (clones). It does not involve the fusion of gametes.
- Fission: Common in unicellular organisms like Paramecium and Amoeba. In binary fission, the parent cell divides into two equal parts.
- Budding: Seen in Yeast and Hydra. A small outgrowth or 'bud' develops on the parent body, matures, and eventually detaches to live independently.
- Natural Vegetative Propagation: Plants use organs like runners (strawberry), rhizomes (ginger), tubers (yam/potato), and bulbs (onion) to reproduce without seeds.
- Artificial Vegetative Propagation: Man-made methods to multiply plants.
- Grafting: Joining a scion (stem) of one plant to the stock (root system) of another.
- Budding: A variation of grafting where a single bud is used.
- Layering: Bending a branch to the ground and covering it with soil until it develops roots.
2. Sexual Reproduction in Flowering Plants
The flower is the reproductive organ of angiosperms.
- Floral Parts: The Calyx (sepals), Corolla (petals), Androecium (stamens - male), and Gynoecium (carpels - female).
- Pollination: The transfer of pollen grains from the anther to the stigma. Cross-pollination leads to healthier offspring and greater genetic variation compared to self-pollination.
- Fertilization: The fusion of the male gamete with the egg cell in the ovule to form a zygote.
- Fruits and Placentation: After fertilization, the ovary develops into a fruit.
- Simple Fruits: From a single ovary (e.g., Mango).
- Aggregate Fruits: From many ovaries of one flower (e.g., Strawberry).
- Multiple Fruits: From a whole inflorescence (e.g., Pineapple).
- Placentation types: Marginal (beans), Parietal (pawpaw), Axile (tomato), Free-central (pepper), and Basal (sunflower).
3. Reproduction in Mammals
Mammals undergo internal fertilization involving specialized organs.
- Male Reproductive System: Consists of the testes (produce sperm and testosterone), scrotum, vas deferens, and penis.
- Female Reproductive System: Consists of ovaries (produce eggs, estrogen, and progesterone), fallopian tubes (site of fertilization), uterus (site of implantation), and vagina.
- Fertilization and Development: Fusion of sperm and egg occurs in the oviduct. The resulting zygote implants in the uterine wall. The placenta provides nutrients and oxygen while removing waste.
- Modern Reproductive Health:
- In-vitro Fertilization (IVF): Fertilization occurring outside the body in a laboratory setting.
- Birth Control: Methods include hormonal (pills), barrier (condoms), and permanent (vasectomy/tubal ligation).
- Maternal Health: Alcohol, smoking, and drugs can cause congenital deformities or fetal alcohol syndrome.
