Work, Energy, and Power
1. Work Done
In Physics, Work is defined as the product of the force and the displacement in the direction of the force. Mathematically:
W = F × s × cos(θ)
Where F is force (N), s is displacement (m), and θ is the angle between the force and the displacement. The unit of work is the Joule (J).
2. Energy
Energy is the capacity to do work. It is a scalar quantity and is measured in Joules (J). The common forms include:
- Kinetic Energy (K.E): Energy of motion. K.E = ½mv²
- Potential Energy (P.E): Stored energy based on position. G.P.E = mgh
- Elastic Potential Energy: Energy stored in a stretched/compressed spring. E = ½ke²
3. Power
Power is the rate at which work is done or the rate at which energy is transferred.
Power (P) = Work / Time = Energy / Time.
A common formula for moving objects is P = Force × Velocity (Fv). The SI unit is the Watt (W), where 1W = 1 J/s.
4. Principle of Conservation of Energy
Energy cannot be created or destroyed, but can only be transformed from one form to another. In a closed system, the total mechanical energy (K.E + P.E) remains constant if non-conservative forces like friction are absent.
5. Force-Distance Curve
The area under a Force vs. Distance (Displacement) graph represents the total work done. For a varying force (like a spring), the work is calculated by finding the geometric area (e.g., triangle or trapezoid) under the curve.
6. Energy and Society
Energy is vital for industrialization and development. However, its use has environmental implications.
- Renewable Energy: Sources that replenish naturally (Solar, Wind, Hydro, Biomass, Geothermal).
- Non-Renewable Energy: Finite sources that deplete with use (Coal, Crude oil, Natural Gas, Nuclear).
- Environmental Impacts: Burning fossil fuels leads to Global Warming (via the Greenhouse Effect, primarily CO2) and acid rain. Oil spills damage aquatic ecosystems.
7. Dams, Nuclear, and Solar Energy
- Dams: Use the potential energy of stored water to turn turbines, converting mechanical energy into electricity.
- Nuclear Energy: Produced through Fission (splitting heavy nuclei) or Fusion (combining light nuclei).
- Solar Energy: Collected using Solar Collectors (thermal use) or Solar Panels (Photovoltaic cells) which convert light directly into electricity.
