Motion: Concepts and Dynamics
1. Types of Motion
Motion is the change in position of an object with time. In the JAMB syllabus, we categorize motion into five main types:
- Translational Motion: When a body moves along a path such that every part of the body moves through the same distance in the same time (e.g., a car moving on a straight road).
- Rotational Motion: Motion of a body about a fixed axis (e.g., a spinning top or a turning wheel).
- Oscillatory (Vibratory) Motion: To-and-fro motion about a fixed mean position (e.g., a simple pendulum).
- Spin Motion: Rotation of a body about its own center (e.g., the Earth spinning on its axis).
- Random Motion: Irregular motion in no specific direction (e.g., smoke particles or gas molecules).
2. Relative Motion
Relative motion is the motion of one body with respect to another. For collinear motion (motion in a straight line):
- Same direction: Relative velocity = VA - VB
- Opposite direction: Relative velocity = VA + VB
3. Force and its Types
Force is a push or pull that changes an object's state of rest or uniform motion. Forces are classified into:
- Contact Forces: Require physical contact (e.g., friction, tension, upthrust).
- Field Forces (Non-contact): Act through space (e.g., Gravitational field, Electric field, Magnetic field).
4. Linear Motion and Equations
Key definitions include:
- Speed: Rate of change of distance (Scalar).
- Velocity: Rate of change of displacement (Vector).
- Acceleration: Rate of change of velocity.
Equations of Uniformly Accelerated Motion:
- v = u + at
- s = ut + ½at²
- v² = u² + 2as
- s = ½(u + v)t
5. Motion Under Gravity
For objects falling freely, acceleration 'a' is replaced by 'g' (approx. 9.8m/s² or 10m/s²). When going up, g is negative; when coming down, g is positive.
6. Projectile Motion
A projectile is an object launched into the air. Key formulas include:
- Time of flight (T): (2u sin θ) / g
- Maximum Height (H): (u² sin² θ) / 2g
- Range (R): (u² sin 2θ) / g
7. Newton's Laws of Motion
- First Law (Inertia): A body remains at rest or constant motion unless acted upon by a force.
- Second Law: Force is proportional to the rate of change of momentum (F = ma).
- Third Law: Action and reaction are equal and opposite.
- Momentum: p = mv. Impulse: I = Ft = m(v - u). Area under a Force-Time graph equals Impulse.
8. Circular Motion
Motion in a circle at constant speed involves Centripetal Acceleration directed toward the center. Formula: F = mv² / r.
9. Simple Harmonic Motion (S.H.M)
SHM is motion where acceleration is directly proportional to displacement from a fixed point and is always directed towards that point (a = -ω²x). Examples include a mass on a spring and a simple pendulum. Resonance occurs when a system is made to vibrate at its natural frequency by an external periodic force.
