Introduction to Maps
A map is a selective, symbolized, and generalized representation of the whole or a part of the Earth's surface, typically drawn to scale on a flat sheet of paper, board, or screen. The scientific study and practice of making maps is called Cartography. Maps are indispensable tools in geography as they store, display, and analyze spatial information about physical and human phenomena.
Essential Components of a Map
For a map to be considered complete and scientifically useful, it must possess key marginal information. These include:
- Title: Clearly states the area covered and the subject matter of the map (e.g., "Vegetation Map of Nigeria").
- Scale: Represents the ratio between map distance and actual ground distance. It can be written as a Statement Scale, a Linear Scale, or a Representative Fraction (R.F.).
- Legend or Key: Explains the meaning of colors, signs, and symbols used on the map.
- North Arrow/Direction: Points to geographical or magnetic north, aiding navigation and orientation.
- Grid System: Lines of latitude and longitude (or coordinate grids) used to locate places accurately.
- Border or Margin: Frames the mapped area.
Classification of Maps
Maps can be broadly classified based on two main criteria: Scale and Function/Purpose.
1. Classification by Scale
Scale determines the level of detail and the size of the area shown. There are two major classes:
- Large-Scale Maps: These show a small area in great detail. The denominator of the scale is small (e.g., 1:1,000 or 1:10,000). Examples include Cadastral maps (used to show property boundaries, land ownership, and buildings) and Topographical maps.
- Small-Scale Maps: These show a very large area (like a continent or the entire world) with minimal detail. The denominator is large (e.g., 1:1,000,000 or 1:5,000,000). Examples include Atlas maps and Wall maps.
2. Classification by Function or Purpose
Based on what they depict, maps are categorized into:
- Physical Maps: Show natural features such as mountains, rivers, lakes, relief, and soil. Examples include Geologic maps, Relief maps, and Climatic maps.
- Political/Cultural Maps: Show human-made boundaries, administrative divisions, cities, roads, and railway networks.
- Thematic Maps: Designed to display specific themes or variables. Types of thematic maps include:
- Choropleth Maps: Use various shades or intensities of a color to represent statistical values (e.g., population density).
- Isoline Maps: Contain lines connecting points of equal value. These include Contours (equal height), Isotherms (equal temperature), Isobars (equal pressure), Isohyets (equal rainfall), and Isohalines (equal salinity).
- Dot Maps: Use dots of equal size to represent spatial distribution and concentration of features (e.g., livestock distribution).
- Flow Maps: Use arrows of varying thickness to represent the movement of goods, migration, or traffic.

Maps serve diverse functions across various fields:
