Chemistry and Industry
The chemical industry is concerned with the conversion of raw materials into useful finished products through chemical processes. These industries are vital for the economic development of any nation.
1. Classification of Chemicals
Chemicals produced in industries are generally classified into two categories: Heavy Chemicals and Fine Chemicals.
- Heavy Chemicals: These are chemicals produced in very large quantities because they are essential for other industries. They are often less pure and cheaper. Examples: Tetraoxosulphate (VI) acid (H2SO4), Sodium hydroxide (NaOH), Ammonia (NH3), and Chlorine.
- Fine Chemicals: These are chemicals produced in smaller quantities but with a very high degree of purity for specific uses. They are usually expensive. Examples: Drugs (pharmaceuticals), analytical reagents, perfumes, and dyes.
2. Types of Chemical Industries and Raw Materials
Industries are often classified based on the products they manufacture:
- Petrochemical Industry: Uses petroleum and natural gas to produce fuels, plastics, and synthetic fibers. Raw materials: Crude oil and natural gas.
- Agrochemical Industry: Produces fertilizers, pesticides, and herbicides to improve agricultural yield. Raw materials: Phosphate rock, nitrogen, and potassium salts.
- Pharmaceutical Industry: Focuses on the production of medicines and vaccines. Raw materials: Plant extracts, animal products, and synthetic chemicals.
- Plastic and Polymer Industry: Produces materials like PVC, polythene, and nylon. Raw materials: Ethene, benzene, and other refinery by-products.
- Ceramics and Glass Industry: Produces glass, tiles, and cement. Raw materials: Silica (sand), limestone, and clay.
- Soaps and Detergents: Raw materials: Vegetable oils/animal fats and caustic soda (NaOH) for soap; petroleum hydrocarbons for detergents.
3. Biotechnology in Industry
Biotechnology is the application of biological organisms, systems, or processes to manufacturing and service industries. It bridges biology and chemistry.
- Fermentation: The use of microorganisms like yeast to convert sugars into ethanol and CO2. This is used in brewing and baking.
- Waste Management: Using bacteria to decompose sewage and industrial waste.
- Biogas Production: Decomposition of organic waste in the absence of oxygen to produce methane fuel.
- Food Processing: Production of cheese, yogurt, and vinegar using specific bacteria.
4. Relevance of Chemical Industries
Chemical industries are relevant because they provide employment, create wealth, produce essential consumer goods, and improve the standard of living through advancements in medicine and agriculture.
5. Factors Affecting Location of Industries
- Availability of raw materials (to reduce transport costs).
- Proximity to markets.
- Availability of energy/power supply.
- Availability of water and labor.
- Government policy and transport infrastructure.
