Agricultural Ecology

Agricultural ecology involves the study of the relationship between agricultural organisms and their environment. Understanding this relationship is crucial for maximizing crop yield and livestock productivity in West Africa.

1. Ecological Zones of West Africa

West Africa is divided into several ecological zones based on rainfall patterns, temperature, and vegetation. These zones transition from the humid south to the arid north.

  • Mangrove/Saltwater Swamp: Found along the coast. High rainfall, muddy soil, and salt-tolerant vegetation like mangroves.
  • Freshwater Swamp: Located inland from the mangrove forest. Characterized by high rainfall and waterlogged soils.
  • Rain Forest: High rainfall (above 2000mm), high temperature, and dense vegetation with tall trees (mahogany, iroko).

  • Sahel Savanna: Very low rainfall (below 500mm), sparse vegetation, and desert-like conditions.
  • Montane Forest: High altitude areas like the Jos Plateau and Obudu Ranch. Cool temperatures and unique vegetation.

2. Agricultural Products per Ecological Zone

The distribution of crops and livestock is primarily determined by the climate of these zones.

  • Forest Zones: Tree crops (Cocoa, Oil Palm, Rubber, Kola nut) and root crops (Yam, Cassava, Cocoyam).
  • Savanna Zones: Cereal crops (Maize, Millet, Sorghum, Rice), legumes (Cowpea, Groundnut), and fiber crops (Cotton).
  • Livestock Distribution: Cattle, sheep, and goats are mostly concentrated in the Savanna zones due to the abundance of pasture and lower incidence of Tsetse flies (which cause Trypanosomiasis).

3. Environmental Factors Affecting Production

Environmental factors are categorized into two main groups: Biotic and Abiotic.

Abiotic (Non-living) Factors

  • Rainfall: Determines the type of crops and the growing season. Excessive rain causes leaching and erosion.
  • Temperature: Affects germination, photosynthesis, and the metabolic rate of livestock.
  • Sunlight (Photoperiodism): Necessary for photosynthesis. Some crops are short-day, long-day, or day-neutral.
  • Wind: Aids pollination and seed dispersal but can also spread diseases and cause lodging (falling) of crops.
  • Soil pH: Affects the availability of nutrients in the soil.

Biotic (Living) Factors

  • Pests: Organisms that damage crops (e.g., locusts, aphids).
  • Parasites: Organisms that live on or in a host (e.g., ticks, liver flukes in livestock).
  • Predators: Animals that kill and eat other animals (e.g., hawks eating chicks).
  • Soil Organisms: Include beneficial ones like earthworms (aeration) and nitrogen-fixing bacteria, and harmful ones like nematodes.
  • Decomposers: Fungi and bacteria that break down organic matter into nutrients.
