Respiration is the process by which living organisms release energy from food (usually glucose).
It is not the same as breathing — breathing is ventilation, but respiration happens in the cells.

Anaerobic respiration is the breakdown of glucose without oxygen to release a small amount of energy.
It occurs when oxygen is not enough or absent.
Occurs during intense exercise when muscles lack oxygen.

Lactic acid (causes muscle cramps)
Very low (2 ATP)
Used in brewing and baking.
Glucose → Ethanol + Carbon dioxide + Energy
Alcohol (ethanol)
Carbon dioxide (makes bread rise)
