1. Their grades are dropping — even slightly A small drop in one subject is easy to ignore. Don't. A student who scored 68% last term and now scores 54% is telling you something. It rarely gets better on its own.
2. Assignments are always incomplete or "forgotten" This isn't laziness. When a child consistently avoids homework, it usually means the work feels too hard and they don't know how to ask for help.
3. They can't explain what they learned in school Ask your child tonight: "What did you cover in Maths today?" If they can't answer, they're not retaining what's being taught. Sitting in class and actually learning are two different things.
4. They've lost interest in school completely The child who used to talk about their favourite subject now shrugs when you ask about school. That shift in attitude is a red flag, not a phase.
5. One or two subjects are consistently failing Sometimes it's not everything — just Chemistry, or Further Maths, or English. A subject-specific struggle points to a gap that needs targeted attention, not general encouragement.

1. They're more irritable and withdrawn than usual Yes, teenagers have moods. But a child who is consistently angry, sad, or closed off — especially around school topics — is likely overwhelmed and doesn't know how to say it.
2. They complain of headaches and stomach aches before school Physical symptoms are often how teenagers express anxiety they can't put into words. If it happens regularly, take it seriously.
3. They're saying things like "I'm not smart enough" or "I'll just fail anyway" This is the most important one. Negative self-talk at this stage can become a self-fulfilling prophecy by the time WAEC arrives. It needs to be addressed immediately.
What To Do When You See These Signs
Start with a conversation, not a confrontation
Don't open with "Why are your grades dropping?" That puts them on the defensive immediately.
Try instead: "I've noticed things seem a bit tough lately. How are you feeling about school?"
Then listen. Really listen. Don't jump to solutions in the first five minutes.
Talk to their teachers
Your child's class teacher sees them every day. One conversation can reveal things your child will never tell you at home. Don't wait for PTA meetings — reach out directly.
Get targeted help early
